Relief washed over me when I walked into Jack's office and noticed that his chair was back in its place next to the table. I sat down in my normal corner of the couch and waited for Jack to start our session.
Jack sat down and leaned back in his chair while looking over his notes. "At the end of our last session, I suggested some anti-anxiety meds. Have they been helping?"
"It's hard to say. I mean, I didn't think I felt anxious before, but everything seems a bit softer, if that makes sense."
"Wonderful. It sounds like they are working. Would you like to start us off today?"
"Are you asking me if there is anything I want to talk about?"
"I am."
"And if I don't have anything to talk about, we can end the session early?"
Jack laughed. "That isn't how this works."
I shrugged. "Well, there isn't anything new going on, so nothing much to talk about."
Jack raised his eyebrows. "Really? That's what you are going with?" He chuckled. "Okay, then. Diane mentioned you received a letter the other day. That's pretty exciting. Who was it from?"
"Carrie and Darren."
"Tell me about the letter."
I sighed. I really didn't want to talk to Jack about the Clarkes. "They are doing well in North Dakota. DJ started preschool, and they sent me a picture of him on his first day of school. He looked so cute with the backpack hanging down nearly to the back of his knees." I smiled. "Carrie has made a few friends at her job, and Darren was promoted at the construction company. He's a supervisor now. The move has been really good for the family. I can't wait to join them."
"Did they say anything about the adoption process?"
"Ugh. Yes." My eyes started to sting, and I wiped at them.
"Continue."
"You really aren't going to let me just sit with this are you?" Jack shook his head. "Fine. The judge denied the abandonment paperwork. Apparently, he doesn't feel like we have tried hard enough to find my parents. He wants them to put ads in newspapers across Iowa and Nebraska. He also suggested they hire a private detective. They can resubmit the paperwork in six months if we haven't found my parents."
"Are they going to hire one, then?" Jack asked.
"They can't afford to right now. Darren had been out of work for a few months before they moved. But Carrie talked to the Des Moines Register and the Omaha Daily Herald. Both papers will run the ads for two weeks at no cost to Carrie and Darren. She is also talking to the papers in Lincoln, Ames, Iowa City, and Cedar Falls."
"It's unusual for a newspaper to run ads at no cost. How did that happen?"
"She explained why she was looking for the Michaels, how they abandoned me and that she and Darren want to adopt me." I shrugged. "I guess the people at the paper were moved by what she told them."
Jack nodded. "That makes sense. The big question is, since the
